In what the social network describes as an experiment, ads will appear in a game called Balston that other developers are rolling out similar ads.
The company said it would listen to feedback before launching a more comprehensive virtual reality ad.
It also revealed that it is testing a new ad format that is said to be unique to VR.
In 2017, shortly after Facebook bought Oculus, producer Palmer Luski told NextWeb, "We will not track you, flash your ads, or attack you."
But in a blog post on Oculus' website, the firm said: "We're looking for new ways for developers to earn revenue. This is an important part of ensuring we are creating a self-reliant platform that can support a variety of business models. Unlock new types of content and audiences. '
